Weed killers (also referred to as herbicides) are among the most frequently purchased substances when it comes to proper lawn maintenance. Herbicides are utilized to control or destroy unwanted vegetation. If you are currently experiencing weed infestation in your lawn, you will have to rely on a solid pesticide to solve the problem and prevent it from becoming a disaster. With regard to herbicides, two products are usually compared most frequently: Ortho Ground Clear vs Roundup.

The main difference between GroundClear and Roundup is that the former contains imazapyr, which lets it penetrate hard weedy surfaces and kill weed root systems to prevent a comeback. RoundUp is better for focused hits without damaging the root systems of beneficial plants that grow nearby.

Being the champions on the herbicide manufacturing scene, these brands produce pesticides known for their one-of-a-kind efficiency. Want to know more on the Ortho vs Roundup topic? In this post, I’m going to let you in on my vast experience with these brands.

Everyone wants a weed killer that’s capable of destroying the roots of tenacious grass and banishing the pesky plants for good. Most of the time, people are aimed at laying their hands on a trusted herbicide to fully eradicate weeds without damaging their beneficial lawn vegetation.

If you’re here because you’ve been Googling Ortho Ground Clear vs Roundup, you’ve come to the right place. Here, I’m going to elaborate on how the products of these two popular brands are similar, as well as cover their major distinctions.

What Is Ortho Ground Clear: Ingredients & Brief Overview

Ortho Ground Clear

Are you sick of the invasive grass sprouting up in your driveway or patio cracks? Ortho Ground Clear is what you need. The products of this brand are a perfect fit when it comes to hard ‘weedy’ surfaces, such as stone walkways, bricks, tiles, etc.

Ortho Ground Clear destroys an array of grass types, preventing them from making a major comeback. If you have heavy clay soil, the effect of Ortho Ground Clear will last more than a year.

Wondering how to use Ortho Ground Clear? One important thing should be taken into consideration here: if you live in a rainy climate, you will have to occasionally reapply this pesticide, which is natural.

When it comes to the active ingredients, Ortho Ground Clear contains glyphosate and imazapyr. I will elaborate on these components when comparing Ortho Ground Clear and Roundup below. Overall, the Ortho Ground Clear brand produces a multitude of weed killers that might be your best bet in many situations.

What Is Roundup: Active Ingredient & Brief Review

Roundup’s active ingredient is glyphosate. This herbicide doesn’t contain imazapyr, which means it’s capable of eliminating tenacious weeds without damaging the roots of beneficial plants. That being said, if you have a lot of various plants in your garden, this particular herbicide is sure to tickle your fancy. Furthermore, the Roundup weed killer is great for focusing on particular locations where undesirable grass is known to persist.

Also, with the help of this herbicide, you can arrange proper anti-weed preparation of your lawn prior to planting the grass seeds. Just ensure you use the substance in the right areas. Gardeners like that Roundup makes rain-resistant products — very handy for those who reside in rainy regions. In addition to all this, these products are both warmth- and cold-friendly.

Ground Clear & Roundup: Similar Features

Roundup

Both Ortho Ground Clear and Roundup products are turned to when it comes to massive weed invasions. Both companies use glyphosate as the active ingredient in their products. This component is powerful and very effective when it comes to battling weeds. However, it’s also said to increase cancer risk, harm the environment, and affect a lot of beneficial plants, too.

Both Ground Clear and Roundup products are packed in bottles of a variety of sizes. In the majority of cases, these products are ready to use, so make sure you put on your safety garden garments when applying these weed killers. Both Ground Clear and Roundup herbicides come in with- or without-sprayer versions.

Another similar feature of the two herbicides is that they both should be applied with detailed directions for use in mind. Both Roundup and Ortho Ground Clear precautions should be taken into consideration and followed religiously. Aside from their implementation, both these weed killers should be stored and disposed of with great care.

If you’ve already opened the bottle of the herbicide, make sure you seal it properly when not in use. Do not allow your children to get anywhere near these pesticides, for they’re truly dangerous if used improperly. If your child happens to swallow the hazardous product, rush them to the hospital without a moment’s delay.

Ground Clear & Roundup: Main Distinctions

Now, let’s talk about the main differences between the products of these two brands. With regard to such a parameter as formulation, you can purchase most Ortho Ground Clear products as ready-to-apply pesticides. With regard to the Roundup weed killers, they come in a variety of forms, e.g., ready-to-apply herbicides, concentrates, sprays, precision gels, etc.

If you use Ortho Ground Clear, you will see the results in just a few hours. With regard to Roundup, you may have to wait a few hours longer to see the dead greenery (up to twelve in total). One of the major distinctions (and advantages) of the Ortho Ground Clear products is that they prevent weeds from reappearing in your yard or garden for as long as twelve months in one application.

Ortho Ground Clear

The only downside (and distinction) of the Ground Clear products is that they contain imazapyr, which destroys plants’ roots. Therefore, if you use them where other (beneficial) plants thrive, the herbicide will easily destroy them as well. If you want to eliminate the weeds without damaging the good plants around it, then you better turn to Roundup.

The only disadvantage (read as another distinction) is that Roundup has to be reapplied when it comes to the especially tenacious weeds. If you’re on the prowl for a ruthless, long-lasting, and fast-acting herbicide, opt for Ortho Ground Clear. However, if your goal is, for instance, to eradicate clovers or dandelions, you won’t necessarily need to destroy other plants just to achieve it. In this case, Roundup is your best choice.

Remember that irrespective of the weed killer you purchase, learn all there is to know about how to use it properly in your soil. Also, don’t forget about the rules of application and storage. Read Ortho Ground Clear warnings and research the reviews. Study Roundup precautions and adhere to user instructions with diligence. These things are very important.

As you may have already guessed, herbicides of both brands are effective. They have their perks and drawbacks, that’s a fact. Therefore, learning as much as you can about them is paramount. 1. Can I use ground clear on poison ivy that is in a dense bed of pachysandra ?
I do not want to kill the pachysandra.

    Reply
    • Excellent question! Ortho Groundclear is an extremely effective non-selective herbicide that primarily targets weed roots of any plant it gets on. Therefore, if you want to save pachysandra, you will have to use another means. In your case, I recommend using RoundUp products. Since they don’t contain the aggressive ingredient Imazapyr in their composition (there’s Glyphosate only), they have more gentle effects on weeds and do not damage good plants. It’s also true that you’ll have to wait for noticeable results a bit.

    • Hi Jess!
Thanks for your question. For poison ivy, I recommend using the Ortho Groundclear Vegetation Killer. This plant can be dangerous, so a reliable remedy is crucial to eliminate it. Ortho Groundclear contains a non-selective herbicide Imazapyr that can tackle even hard-to-remove weeds. Most importantly, it has a long-lasting effect as it damages the plants’ root system. If poison ivy has spread widely and you are not afraid to damage beneficial plants, use this particular remedy.

    • Hi Bryan,
I have agressive nutsedges in my perennial gardens. Can I use the ground clear to selectively spray them?
      Thanks.

      Reply
      • Using Ground Clear in planted areas might not be a good idea. The imazapyr in it is non-selective, meaning it will likely kill any vegetation including beneficial plants on that area. Recommended herbicides for nutsedges include bentazon, imazaquin, halosulfuron, and more depending on the species. Still, Ground Clear works very effectively when it comes to nutsedges and may destroy many invasive species during several hours.

  2. Ortho makes several “Groundclear” products with different attributes – vegetation, Super, weed and grass, etc. Please be specific when reporting on these products to avoid confusion. Thank you.
